Gentry Leach

Artist Statement

My work is a meditation on deeper truths surrounding identity and how the world around us continuously shapes both our interior and exterior landscapes. Inspired by the works of Jean Baudrillard, I am reflecting on how the evolution of technology has manipulated our sense of belonging to ourselves through subconscious programming as a result of separative, image-based media reigning over our contemporary lives. This collective spell distorts the fundamental values of being human; love, empathy, and attention, while driving us away from an intimate relationship to each other and the natural world. My goal is to highlight the existential disconnect between self and soul within western culture, while asking the viewer to consider their relationship to the digital simulacrum imposed upon our lives.
